Milton Keynes Stables I was very excited when I heard that Mark Steel was performing a leg of his “What’s Going On?” tour at the charmingly intimate venue The Stables in Wave-n-don (just outside the perfect symmetry of MK’s roundabouts and square buildings). In one of those complicated “I owe you one” lifts, I was joined by several friends, none of whom really knew who I was banging on about in the car. I desperately tried to recount memorable TV appearances that my ignorant friends may be aware of: An episode of Red Dwarf perhaps? Several appearances on “Never Mind the Buzzcocks”, “QI” or “Mock the Week”? Surely you saw one of his seven appearances on “Have I Got News for You”, no? I was about to admit defeat when one our number asked if he was in the BBC’s “Mark Steel Lectures”... For those who HAVE heard of Mark, you will know him as a columnist, author and comedian with a slight tendency towards the left side of socialism. But Mark is now older and, err, scruffier. He’s had ‘real’ jobs and been fired. He’s got married, had kids and been divorced. So he’s a changed man? No, not really. His observations and analysis are still brilliant, delivered in a way that leaves you nodding in agreement whilst shaking your head in despair. Who exactly decided that the back of a pay and display parking ticket was an “opportunity”? Now those two square inches are home to the world’s tiniest adverts! And so it continued... But it was Mark’s ability grip the audience so well and for so long that really shone through. Simply two hours of one man and his Mic (and seven brilliant regional accents). His attention to detail about nearby Bletchley, Wolverton and the MK Dons’ old home at the National Hockey Stadium was fabulous. If, like Wavendon, the rest of his tour dates are sold out then check for his Lecture Series on BBC3 or Have I Got News for You on Dave ja vu. More please! Star Rating 5/5, absolutely brilliant Review by Justin Spary |
