Treasure Island

The Circle

With Somerset Maugham’s characteristically shrewd understanding of human nature, The Circle is an elegant and entertaining social satire that explores the conflict between romance and responsibility.

Dorset, 1921, Lady Kitty (Susan Hampshire) abandons her husband and young son to run away with politician Lord Porteous. Thirty years later Kitty returns from exile in Italy for a family reunion and though worn down by age she still clings to her glamorous past.

After discovering her daughter-in-law Elizabeth is tempted to embark on a similar affair, events turn full circle, leaving Kitty to decide whether or not to encourage the elopement.
